Welcome to Year 5/6  2026-27!

Our class names are Neptune, Comet and Mars.

Years 5 and 6 are challenging but exciting years for the children as they enter upper key stage 2 and, in year 6,prepare for the SATs and transition to high school.  We aim to promote independence and resilience as they get older, while providing a positive and supportive learning journey along the way.

SATs
The 2027 tests are scheduled for Monday 10th May – Thursday 13th May 2027. It is vitally important that your child attends school all this week. The timetable is usually as follows but this is subject to change.
Monday: Spelling Punctuation and Grammar Test
Tuesday: Reading Test
Wednesday: Maths Calculations Paper & Reasoning Paper 1
Thursday: Maths Reasoning Paper 2
After SATs, to celebrate all the hard work put in by year 6, we usually have a treat day. This will be announced nearer the time.

 

General Information
Please send any messages for the teacher in an email addressed to y56.hopton@kirkleeseducation.uk with the name of the class teacher: Mrs Etheridge, Miss Dunford or Miss Barnes-Gott depending on the issue.
If your child is unable to do PE, they must have a written letter/email explaining why.
For PE, children with long hair must tie it back and earrings must be covered with tape or taken out. On PE days children may attend in their PE kits.
Children may bring in their own clear pencil cases but they must be able to fit inside their class drawer. Larger, oddly shaped or overly fluffy pencil cases will be sent home.
Please encourage your child to read and practise their weekly spellings using Spelling Shed – this is monitored.
You should not bring fidget toys in Year 5 and 6 unless they are part of a special education plan agreed with the SENCO. Any inappropriate toys will be sent home.

Online Safety
Many Year 5/6 children spend a lot of their time on social networks, even ones that are too old for them. We have had a number of issues concerning inappropriate use of such networks, in addition to texting and emails. This has led to some children becoming very stressed in class.
When children bring issues relating to online activity into school it can become very disruptive. Please be vigilant regarding your child’s online activity and encourage them to voice any of their concerns rather than try to deal will it on their own.
We do not encourage the use of mobile phones. If your child needs one please bring in a letter. You will also need to sign a usage consent form for safeguarding reasons. Any phone must be switched off upon entering the school grounds and will be kept in a named wallet in a safe place by the teacher.
