Routines

Register/absence

A register of attendance is completed for every session. Children are required to find their name card on entry to the building to indicate their arrival. This is supervised by an adult.

If your child will not be attending for any reason, please notify the school office. As part of our safeguarding requirements, all unidentified absences are followed up with a telephone call from the school office.

Water bottles

Please provide your child with a water bottle which is labelled with their name. They are able to have either water or sugar-free juice in their bottle. Cups for water are available on request, if your child forgets their bottle.  Water bottles are kept in the classroom, and are available throughout the day, except for during group times, as the children are required to participate.

Toilets

The children have free access to the toilets throughout the session. Children are encouraged to go to the toilet before carpet group times. Should they need to go during group time, children are asked to raise their hand. Children in foundation stage are always allowed to go on request. We soon get to know the children who need to go frequently; these children are especially encouraged to go before group time starts.

Children who have recently toilet trained or are in the process of training are prompted to visit the toilet several times during the session.

All children are encouraged to be independent in the toilet. Self-wiping is best developed when practised in the relaxed environment of a home. If children are in need of assistance, one adult supports the child, whilst a second adult observes (from the doorway) to ensure we are fulfilling our safeguarding requirements. Support is offered with the child’s verbal consent. If personal care has been given, you will be informed via a ‘personal care record form’. If you have specific concerns or your child has medical needs, please contact school.

Milk and Snacks

All children under the age of 5 years are entitled to a carton of semi-skimmed milk. After 5, you can purchase milk at a subsidised rate. Milk is ordered directly from the cool milk. Information of how to order is available from the school office.

Milk is provided straight from the carton via a straw; this is offered at snack time.  Children also receive a small potion of fruit as part of the ‘Free fruit for schools’ government initiative. This ranges from apples, pears, bananas, tangerines to mini cucumber, tomatoes and sugar snap peas. Occasionally, the children are provided with bags of raisins or fresh strawberries. All children are supervised during snack time.

Book bags

All Reception children require a book bag.

Please could all sound/reading bags be put in the children's drawers on arrival in the morning. If a member of staff wants to locate a child's sound/reading work, we go to their drawers. Having book bags in drawers also creates a little more space in the cloak room. Staff will support your child to do this in the first few weeks.
